Getting Started with the Desktop App

Install, set up your secure vault, and start anonymizing documents in minutes.

Download the App

Download the installer for your operating system. Windows is currently available, with macOS and Linux coming soon.

Which version should I choose?

  • Installer (.exe): Recommended for most users. Standard installation.
  • MSI: For enterprise deployment via Group Policy or SCCM.
  • Portable (.zip): No installation needed. Run from USB drive.

Install

Windows Installer (.exe)

  1. Double-click the downloaded .exe file
  2. If Windows SmartScreen appears, click "More info" then "Run anyway"
  3. Follow the installation wizard
  4. Launch from Start Menu or desktop shortcut

Portable Version

  1. Extract the .zip file to your preferred location
  2. Double-click blurgate.legal.exe to run
  3. No installation required - runs directly

Create Your Secure Vault

On first launch, you'll create a secure vault to store your credentials, encryption keys, and processing history.

3.1 Generate Recovery Phrase

A 24-word recovery phrase will be generated. This is your master key to the vault.

Critical: Write this down!

Store your recovery phrase in a safe place. This is the ONLY way to recover your vault if you forget your PIN or lose your device.

3.2 Confirm Your Phrase

You'll be asked to confirm 3 random words from your recovery phrase. This ensures you've saved it correctly before proceeding.

3.3 Set Your PIN

Create a 6-digit PIN for quick daily access. You'll use this PIN to unlock the app instead of entering your full recovery phrase each time.

Sign In to Your Account

Link your blurgate.legal account to sync presets, encryption keys, and access your token balance.

Browser Authentication

  1. Click "Sign in with Browser" in the app
  2. Your default browser will open to the login page
  3. Sign in with your existing blurgate.legal account
  4. Click "Authorize" to link the desktop app
  5. The browser will redirect back and the app will be connected

Create a free account to get started with 300 tokens per month. You can process files without an account, but you'll need one to use the analysis and anonymization features.

Process Your First File

You're all set! Here's how to anonymize your first document:

Drop a File

Drag and drop a PDF, DOCX, or other supported file onto the dropzone.

Select a Preset

Choose a detection preset (GDPR, HIPAA, Financial, etc.) or use the default.

Click "Start Analysis"

The app extracts text locally and sends it for PII detection.

Review Detected Entities

See what was found grouped by type. Deselect any false positives.

Save the Anonymized File

Choose output format and save. The document is reconstructed locally with PII replaced.
